    “City Lung”
Neighbors in the Strip (NITS) and The Sprout Fund will dedicate the first mural inspired by Pittsburgh’s Chinese community on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
The dedication will begin at the site of the mural, on 23rd Street and Penn Avenue, outside the WFH Oriental Food Market, owned by Benjamin An. The event will feature a Lion Dance, provided through the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans. The Lion Dance is one of China’s most distinctive cultural arts and is performed to frighten evil spirits and bring luck and prosperity. Following the dedication a reception will be held at Mullaney’s Harp Fiddle, 2329 Penn Avenue.

Through a grant from The Sprout Fund, the mural enhances the east wall of WFH Oriental Food Market, at 2227 Penn Avenue. During a series of community discussions Mr. An introduced the concept of a “City Lung,” a spot for meditation and contemplation of nature where the spirit can be restored along with the city air, as a basis for the mural. Artist, Ian Thomas, brought this concept to life with images based loosely on the Chinese city of Guilin, a small city nestled among undulating, green hills, and the Li River, China’s most beautiful and scenic river. The “gumdrop” hills and misty limestone pinnacles of Guilin’s mystical landscape have inspired generations of painters and poets and will now inspire travelers on Penn Avenue.

Mr. Thomas earned an MFA in Ceramics at Texas Tech where he explored his interest in sculpture, printmaking and paint. He has instructed at the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh, the Summer Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Slippery Rock and a workshop at Houston Baptist University. Mr. Thomas has also studied abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava Slovakia and the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen China.
“Ian’s familiarity with Chinese traditions in art made him an ideal choice to translate the Chinese traditions to an American setting,” said Becky Rodgers, NITS executive director, “The Strip is Pittsburgh’s most comfortably diverse community and we are delighted to show our respect to Pittsburgh’s Chinese community through this mural.”
Please join us as we celebrate this beautiful addition to the Strip District.

Min Xiao-Fen and her Blue Pipa Trio

This May marked Silk Screen's third and most successful Asian Film Festival. Now, the Asian Arts Organization is expanding to showcase artists, dancers, filmmakers and musicians throughout the year. This September, Silk Screen will present a concert by the world-renowned Min Xiao-Fen and her Blue Pipa Trio in what promises to be an exciting evening of cultural fusion and cohesion. Blue Pipa is a New York City based trio and non-profit organization dedicated to the exploration and promotion of traditional and modern cultural music. The group's musical experimentation features the Pipa, a plucked Chinese string instrument similar to the lute. The Blue Pipa Trio plays Min Xiao-Fen's compositions and arrangements, interpreting and improvising Chinese folk music, American Jazz and Bluegrass. The trio includes Dean Johnson on the bass and guitarist Steve Salermo. Min Xiao-Fen is a critically acclaimed pipa player who came to the United States from China in the early 90s and achieved musical fame. She has given solo performances in Brussels, Vienna and New York. Min became the first Chinese musician invited to play at Jazz at the Lincoln Center where she performed a solo set of the music of Thelonious Monk. Last year, Ms. Min was a featured composer and performer for the American Composers Orchestra's "Composer Out Front" project. She participated in the Pacific Symphony's American Composers Festival 2004 alongside Yo-Yo Ma and worked on Bjork's recent album Volta on the song "I See Who You Are." She was last in Pittsburgh for the Opera Theater's Production of a Philip Glass opera Sound of a Voice in 2007. She will play traditional pipa solo repertoire and Haung Ruo's new piece for solo pipa "Written on the Wind" for the Silk Screen concert. The concert will take place downtown at CAPA (111 Ninth Street), Saturday, September 27, at 7 PM. Tickets will be available at the door or online starting August 1st at www.silkscreenfestival.org, www.proartstickets.org or by phone at 412-394-3353. Tickets purchased before September 20 are $20, and $25 after. Student and senior tickets are $15 with valid ID. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more. Silk Screen proudly presents the critically acclaimed film Finishing the Game at the Three Rivers Film Festival.

    Finishing the Game

Premiering to raves at Sundance, this good-natured spoof satirizes the making of Bruce Lee’s final film Game of Death. A martial arts icon and international movie star, Lee died prior to finishing the movie, having only completed 30

minutes of shooting. But studio heads decided to complete the film by launching a search for a look-alike replacement attracting hopefuls from around the world. From the director of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, this comedy also confronts issues of racism and the stereotyping of Asian-American actors. (Justin Lin, 2007; USA; 88 min)

Playing: Tuesday, November 6 at 9:30.
